?This year our class is taking on the challenge oying to solve some of the issues that have plagued our globe over the past twenty years. This page is designed to record our journey along the way as well as serve as a dumping ground for any information that we may come across as we begin and continue to research a possible solution.

Global Issue #1:Teen Pregnancy

The following document will serve as a template for you to follow as you go along and begin organizing you information.

Global Issue #1: Teen Pregnancy

Background of Issue: (who?, what?, where?, when?, why?)

Where is this an issue? -Mississippi has the highest teen birth rate in America, because they do not offer sex- education in schools. South Korea and japan have lowest birth rate US being at the top with almost 1,000,000 teen pregnancies each year. California makes a close second, due to the teens smoking weed which leads to bad choices. New Hampshire has the lowest birth rate.
the Philippines has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) official said. The US leads the industrialized world in teen pregancies rate. Our ibrthrates are nearly double great britian, four times france and germany, and ten time sthe rate of japan
We can now conclude that states that offer sex-education in schools will have a lower birth rate than others that do not.

Who is getting pregnant -teenagers with higher religious beliefs are more likely to become pregnant teenager living in abstinence policy states are also more likely to become pregnant. In 2006, Hispanic teens had the highest pregnancy rate. America has highest teen pregnancy rate. About 1 in 3 women become pregnant at least once before they're 20. 8/10 girls and 7/10 boys wish that they could have waited until they were older to have sex.
Teens whose mothers were teen mothers also are more likely to become pregnant at a young age. A good example of this cycle is from the show "My teen is pregnant, and so am i"

When has this problem occurred- Teen pregnancy is now considered an epidemicTeenagers have gotten pregnant for as long as the world has existed, but before the 1960’s, most got married at this age. Every year, approx. 1.000.000 girls are impregnated. The U.S. teen pregnancy rate dropped 6 percent between 2008 and 2009.
Between 1991 and 1996, the teenage birthrate in the United States declined from a 20-year high of 62.1 births per 1,000 females aged 15-19 to 54.4 per 1,000.
Teen pregnancies have been commercialized by the media
"if we can't stop them, we might as well profit off of them."

Why is this happening- teenagers are more impulsive than adults. Teenagers can feel pressured to have sex, and many girls have such low self-asteem that they will so anything to make their boyfriends happy. Many teens are too embarrassed to buy birth control so they attempt at the pull out method, which is proven to be ineffective. Researches found several other factors, as well as TV watching, that influenced whether teens were likely to experience a pregnancy. Teens living with both of their parents have a lower change of a teenage pregnancy, while african-American and girls with more problem behaviors such as discipline problems were more likely to experience a pregnancy. 75% if girls and over half of boys report that girls that have sex do this due to their boyfriends wanting them do proceed without protection.
Some conclude that teens should just "sext" or talk about innapropriate behavior and send nake pics over the phones in the a substitute. However, this will avtually get the teen moe sexually excited for the real thing and will go ahead and do the real thing.
When asking girls why they got pregnant, some replied, "I didn't think to use a condom." This needs to change.

What problem does this make-Many girls have to dropout of high school therefore do not have diplomas. Only 40 percent of teen moms finish high school. They must stop being a teenager and move into adulthood at an early stage. Children from teenagers are more likely to be underweight and perform poorly in school. Girls are more likely to become teen moms as well and boys are more likely to end up in prison.
At least 13% of the births in the US are of teenage girls. Health risks to the baby and children out of teen pregnancy are more likely to experience health, social, and emotional problems.
The mother are at risk in major areas of life such as school failure, poverty, and physical or mental illness.

Costs: human and/or financial cost?
sex-ed is very expensive

Previous Efforts Put Into Place to Help Resolve Issue:

Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization established in 1916 which helps teens by providing advice, contraceptives, and family planning. There are abortion clinics and STD checks for the women. They provide support for women in Africa who do not have the access to proper healthcare. There are services for men as well

Congress had spent over $1.5 billion over the last 15 years for abstinence programs. This did not effect the teenagers decisions.

Reasons why previous efforts to help resolve issue have failed:

All of the states have different laws against teaching sex-education at school. The states with low teen pregnancy rates such has New Hampshire and Georgia are required to teach sex-ed and information about contraception. States like Mississippi and California have a high teen pregnancy rate because they are not required to teach sex-ed in schools. Therefore, we can infer that if a state will offer sex-education at school, they will have a lower teen pregnancy rate.

Planned Parenthood was supposedly the solution to teen pregnancy. However, its motives are controversial. Planned Parenthood provides contraceptives to anyone, to ensure safe-sex. They believe that teens are going to have sex no matter what so let's make it safe. Some parents believe that this is wrong and that these easy to get contraceptives are encouraging sex. Many people strongly oppose Planned Parenthood's values.

Areas of concern on reaching your desired solution to the global issue:

YOUR PLAN OF ACTION! (for this section, you will need to provide the most detail as you lay a step-by-step plan on how your group will go about tackling this issue. It is important that you take a look at all the information you have researched and studied and use that information to develop a true, realistic and effective plan of action. The plan needs to include funding, people involved, time length of project, materials needed, etc…)
